I'm so glad you made it- oh Jesus thank you so much for saying that...
And He said,"Truly I say to you, no prophet is welcome in his hometown."
Wait...what? But what about those beautiful sayings like "Home is where the heart is" and "You can always find your way home"? Those sound much nicer than this verse. In other translations it actually says that a prophet is not acceptable or not accepted in his hometown.
This verse hit me in just the right spot. (Funny how God has a way of doing that.) I have really been struggling with Germany lately. First, it was not going to Dresden. Then it was just the commitment of going at all. It's been a rollercoaster of stressful emotions with me, understandably so. We are commiting our lives for (at least) the next two years (really three if you count the year of fundraising) to a place we've never been and people we've never met. Woah. But it has been my dream, my passion, my husband's dream, his passion, who he is for so long...The fact that this dream is actually becoming a reality is unreal, nay, surreal. It's almost unbelievable. The catch is-we do believe.
Enter Moses moment. Lord, who I am that you would send me? There are many who are much more qualified than me.
Enter Jonah moment. I can't go to these people. What will I say to them? How will they know its you? I can't abandon my life and my family.
24Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and (A)take up his cross and follow Me" Matthew 16:24
It's amazing how clear the Bible actually is. Once God has called you, there's no denying what He wants you to do. If you ask for a way to do His will, He will provide it.
This is how we feel about Chemnitz. We asked God how and He made it very clear, giving us an answer that was almost too easy. And it all happened so quickly, it was almost as if He was saying- you are going to Chemnitz whether you like it or not so you better jump on board! Good news, we are on board.
And the first verse I used has come up a lot recently and has actually been very comforting. It makes me feel like God is sending us to a place where we can use our gifts and be effective, a place where we can join the work that He is already doing. It's not my hometown. It's not even my husband's German hometown. Its a new town that is open and willing and waiting for our gifts, love, and support. A place where we are welcome- before we even arrive.

The Mission Bug
They say once you have been bitten by the mission bug there is no cure for it. This is what Clyde Antwine told me 3 years ago in Dresden, Germany while I was on a Let’s Start Talking mission trip. At that point, he knew that I had been bitten by the mission bug. Now, 3 years later, graduated from college, recently married, my husband and I are ready, in the worst way, to succumb to the bug.
We knew from the very beginning of our relationship that we would do mission work in Germany. My husband is German and has an obvious passion for the people. I learned of my passion in Dresden 3 years ago. I fell in love with the place, the culture, and most of all- the people. I knew my work there was not finished and that I would one day return.
So our plans to do mission work have begun. I suppose this blog will become our story.
37Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."
Luke 9:37-38
